The Drummer Boy In
Phantom Lady

For a truly strange and startling scene, I have to mention the drummer scene from Phantom Lady. This film noir is from 1944 and directed by Robert Siodmak from a novel by Cornell Woolrich.

I saw it quite a few years ago, and don't remember much besides a mysterious hat and this particular scene in a nightclub. Elisha Cook Jr. plays the drummer in a jazz band, at one point working himself up into a frenzy on the drums as he stares at a woman in the audience.

This vision has etched itself into my brain forever. Truly expressionistic, with sound to boot. The editing of this particular scene contributes to the mania perfectly.
