Netflix Movies For
Film Noir Fans

If you are a subscriber to Netflix movies, you have probably already figured this out, but if you aren't yet, you may wonder if they have enough good choices to whet your insatiable film noir appetite.

First of all, it's not that easy to browse for a Netflix movie list of film noir, because on their browsing tool, they list several genres, but not film noir. You can try "classics", but that only brings up about 20 on their visual slider tool, none of which were noir at the time I looked.

If you type in "film noir" in the search box, you only get a handful of noir compilations, (which is great), but not individual movies.

However, if you click on "Genres" at the bottom of the site's pages, you come to their complete list of genres, which is very comprehensive. Lo and behold, there is a film noir genre right under the classics section. Click on it and you can view the offerings, each with a short blurb and a rating from 1 to 5 stars.

Another way to find good film noir Netflix movies is to use the search box to enter the name of a particular actor or director. Maybe you liked someone in one film and want to see what other noirs they have been in. This will bring up a list, which you can explore.

So yes, you can rent film noir from Netflix. If you want, you can still check out a Netflix competitor.

It looks like at the time of this writing (March 2011), Netflix offers roughly 270 titles in the film noir genre. Not bad, and I'm sure more are coming.

For instant gratification, stream to your computer or TV. Or you can still rent DVDs by mail from them, the good old fashioned way.
