Just a little over 2 weeks left until the Castro Theatre in San Francisco is graced with a plethora of film noir fans for 10 days. From January 20th to the 29th, expect to be treated to a sublime selection of noirs at this, my favorite of film festivals. Pedro Almodovar Picks Noirs

In the recent AFI Festival in Hollywood (that's American Film Institute's annual film festival), Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodovar was the Guest Artistic Director. His own films include themes of darkness, desire and psychological teetering. Two of the five films he selected to play at the festival are film noir classics: "Nightmare Alley" and "The Killers" (the earlier, Robert Siodmak version).

Of "The Killers", in the festival program, Almodovar says, "The characters are usually unaware of fatality, that's why the behavior of Burt Lancaster's character is so moving and also so intriguing. He could escape, run away to Mexico, but he's tired, he knows that one day some killers he doesn't know will come and kill him." Almodovar says of "Nightmare Alley": "After a run of bad luck, the unscrupulous mentalist (Tyrone Power) meets his downfall...The ending is sordid and moving, humble in form, without adornments, but terrifying."

Sizzling Film Noir In Palm Springs

There's still time to catch some film noir in Palm Springs this weekend. The Arthur Lyons Film Noir Festival at the Camelot Theatre is running Thursday May 12th through Sunday May 15th. On Saturday, four films are showing: 99 River Street with Evelyn Keyes and John Payne, Plunder Road (with an ensemble cast including Jeanne Cooper, who will make a guest appearance), Loophole with Charles McGraw and Barry Sullivan and Mirage with Gregory Peck and Diane Baker (she will also make a guest appearance).
