Classic Film Noir
Soundtrack Compilations

Give your eyes a break and listen to film noir soundtrack music for that dark, moody, oddly romantic feeling. There are four compilations that I know about, which contain music from a variety of classic noir movies.

The first is Murder Is My Beat: Classic Film Noir Themes And Scenes, on the Rhino/WEA label. This is a collection of song bits from various motion picture soundtracks. Some of the movies covered here include: "Born To Kill", "Crossfire", "Force Of Evil", "Macao", "Laura", "The Postman Always Rings Twice" and "Mildred Pierce".

Quite a lot of dialog is also included, overlapping the music, which may be offensive to some.

The second is Legendary Film Noir Movies, on the Soundtrack Factory label. This one has tracks from the original movies, and so are not of the best audio' quality. But hey, that adds to the appeal in my opinion.

Some of the films whose scores are included are "High Sierra", "Shadow Of A Doubt", "Double Indemnity", "The Killers", "The Blue Gardenia" and "Out Of The Past". Some of the great composers featured include Miklos Rozsa, Max Steiner and Franz Waxman.

The third film noir soundtrack compilation is called White Heat: Film Noir, on the Discovery/WEA label. This CD features songs from thirteen films, all performed by the Jazz At The Movies Band. The recordings are not from the original soundtracks.

Some of the films which the songs are from include: "The Asphalt Jungle", "Touch Of Evil", "The Bad And The Beautiful", "The Naked City" and "This Gun For Hire".

The fourth collection is called Crime Scene USA: Classic Film Noir Themes & Jazz Tracks. It's an import CD from the UK and features theme songs from 31 films, including: "D.O.A.", "Dark Passage", "Born To Kill", "The Postman Always Rings Twice", "Sunset Boulevard", "Double Indemnity", "Mildred Pierce" and the "Killers".

So, whether you're going on a long drive, having someone over for dinner, or merely cleaning the house, one of these compilations may just put you in the mood you want to be in.

The Best of Radio Film Noir features radio broadcasts of various films, narrated by famous actors such as Burt Lancaster, Humphrey Bogart, Richard Widmark, Ray Milland, Joseph Cotten, Orson Welles, Lucille Ball and Edward G. Robinson. The films include "The Killers", "Kiss Of Death", "Strangers On A Train", "Shadow Of A Doubt", "The Third Man", "Key Largo", "The Maltese Falcon" and more.

Listen in to samples of the radio film noir soundtrack by clicking on the box on the right and you can even buy and instantly download the whole album as an mp3.
