About Us Or Me, To Be Exact
My parents were going to name me Jennifer, but the night before my mother went into labor, she and my father watched the film noir classic "Laura" and were so taken by the song, the story, etc., that they changed their minds and named me Laura instead.
It wasn't until I was in my early 20's that I finally saw the movie myself. And loved it, especially Dana Andrew's character.
Moving to San Francisco after college (in the eighties), I spent many happy hours in old movie theaters such as the Roxie and the Castro (amongst others), watching film noir classics, rarities, and other cinematic gems.
I went to film school in London (then called the London International Film School) where Turkish cigarette and cigar smoke drifted up in the school's theater in between us and the Fritz Lang films on the screen amongst others which we were studying.
Cut to years later, and I'm still in love with the stuff. It's a bit thrilling to be in a theater watching a great noir film I've seen already, knowing there are others in the audience who are seeing it for the first time.
It's even more exciting to come across something I haven't seen before. Especially if it turns out to be any good. The very bad ones are often better than the mediocre ones.
This site is not intended to be yet another movie review site, or academic analysis of film noir, but more of a stimulating fan site. It attempts to have fun pointing out some of the psychodynamics going on that we can still relate to in the year 2006 and beyond.
I also hope to help you find film noir books, DVD's, music and posters to further your own exploration of the genre.
It's still a very young site, so please come back soon to see what's new.
